20 SEPTEMBER 2010 - The STAR

KUALA LUMPUR: Efforts to transform the country via the Government Transformation Programme, Economic Transformation Programme and New Economic Model must be underlined by the notion of inclusiveness.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said these programmes would be meaningless unless they were based on inclusiveness, national unity and the principle of social justice.

Bringing some cheer: Najib presenting goodies to children at the luncheon in Serdang yesterday. Also present are Amma president Tan Sri Ravindran Menon (white shirt) and event organising committee chairman Gerald Miranda (right).

“Being inclusive means we have to make sure our policies benefit all groups in Malaysia.

“We have to ensure the system is fair. We have to ensure every single Malaysian can realise his or her potential for maximum value,” he told a large crowd during the first 1Malaysia Malayalee community luncheon yesterday.

Najib said that under the 1Malaysia concept, national unity was not just about accepting and celebrating diversity.

“Diversity also means to recognise the strengths, skills, ideas and innovative capacity of every single Malaysian.

“I would like to see that under the Malaysian sun, every single person would have his or her rightful place. If we garner the strengths of every Malaysian, then we are leveraging on our strengths, talents and abilities to make this massive transformation, so that Malaysia will become a truly successful 21st century nation,” he added.

Najib urged the major ethnic communities in the country to take a leaf from the Malayalee community’s commitment to education and development.
He described the community as a successful multi-cultural and multi-religious society.

“Malays and other races can learn from the Malayalees about not just being multi-religious but also their commitment to education and acquiring knowledge.

“Muslims, Hindus and Christians living side by side in total harmony speaks volumes about their universal values and is a precursor to the 1Malaysia concept,” he said.
