ANI SUP UTARA’S POPULARITY IMPROVES THROUGH FRANCHISING By FRANCHISE DEVELOPMENT DIVISION All this while even though soup is enjoyed at food stalls, it is only considered as a side dish. However, to Hasanuddin Ibrahim, Managing Director of Little Cash Sdn Bhd (LCSB), soup servings such as beef soup, stomach soup, tongue soup and oxtail soup are local dishes that can be pushed up to the global market. Through the trade name of Ani Sup Utara, Hasanuddin has been able to bring various types of soups to London. Even though his success of bringing the trade name Ani Sup Utara to the international stage is laudable, it is his determined spirit of not giving up in against the rough business tides that is highly exemplary to all businessmen. Beginning his business in 1984, he experienced selling yogurts in Kedah and Perlis as well as selling steamed nuts at night markets. He went through bitter-sweet experiences and highs and lows in doing business which all but made him a matured and resolute businessman. Thus, when his wife’s soup became more popular with the local people, Hasanuddin started to think of doing business more efficiently and envisioned to expand it to higher levels. He decided to open a restaurant in Plaza Alam Sentral, Shah Alam. The uniqueness of Ani Sup Utara was well received. In fact the encouraging response urged him to open up new outlets with an average of three outlets a year. Up to December 2008, the popularity of Ani Sup Utara has expanded to 11 outlets. Looking at the potential of the business expanding further and his desire to share his success with other entrepreneurs, Hasanuddin chose to franchise his business. Thus on 18th June 2008, LCSB officially received its franchise license. Until now the success of Ani Sup Utara’s recipe is shared by 32 other franchise outlets. There are many challenges in building a franchise system. It demands a lot of discipline and dedication from the franchisor as well as financial capability. Hasanuddin’s franchise concept is based on standard specifications set by the Registrar of Franchise in accordance with the Franchise Act 1988 under the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK). The soup essence has been tested and declared free from cholesterol by Consolidated Lab Sdn Bhd. In total Hasanuddin has spent almost RM1 million to open four outlets that meet franchise specifications. The outlets are in Section 2 and 9, Shah Alam, Damansara Damai and TTDI. He is very thankful for the grants provided by the Domestic Franchise Development Program (PPFT) under KPDNKK and managed by PNS, which has by and large eased his financial shortcomings. In fact, 26 franchisees from among the 32 established so far have received financial assistance from PNS under the Franchise Financing Scheme. It is hoped that the strong spirit of an entrepreneur like Hasanuddin will provide inspiration to entrepreneurs and budding entrepreneurs alike, to choose franchising as a business and career choice.
